A global game on a global stage: Where sport, politics, and identity intersect

At a time when international events carry increasing geopolitical significance, understanding the broader context behind the world’s most watched tournament offers a unique lens into global dynamics.

The Geopolitics of the World Cup is a social and discussion-based event examining how the tournament intersects with democracy, diplomacy, and civic engagement both globally and locally.

As part of the Civic Futures series, this program explores how global cultural moments, like the FIFA World Cup, reflect and shape political power, national identity, and civic life.

What to expect:

  • Examine the connections between sport, national identity, and civic engagement
  • Engage in a dynamic, accessible conversation with fellow attendees
  • Enjoy refreshments and informal networking in a social, interactive setting
  • Experience the Latin American Cultural Center’s exhibition Costa Rica: Between Oceans and Continents, featuring artifacts, ecological insights, and cultural history

Arrive at 6:00 PM for networking, refreshments, and time to explore the exhibition. The speaking program begins at 7:00 PM and is followed by continued conversation through 8:30 PM.
